What “handyman electrical” means in Florida

In Florida, residential electrical work that doesn’t add new circuits, doesn’t touch the service panel, and doesn’t change the home’s electrical capacity is generally legal handyman work. Swapping a switch, replacing a fixture, putting in a ceiling fan where the wiring already exists — that’s our lane. Anything that involves opening the breaker panel, pulling new wire through the walls, or upgrading service is licensed-electrician work, and we refer it out honestly.

When the price comes in higher

Vaulted ceilings add 25–50% to fixture-replacement labor because we need a taller ladder and more time. Older homes (pre-1980) sometimes have aluminum wiring or non-standard boxes that take extra work. If we find either on arrival, we tell you before we touch anything.

    We charge a per-job rate when we can. When the scope is open-ended, we charge $60/hour per technician. We always tell you which it is before we start so you can decide.

    We pass through our cost on materials at no markup. Receipts on request. Anything we already have on the truck — patch kits, common fasteners — is included in labor at no extra charge.

  • Dump / disposal $25 haul-away of debris

    If the job creates more than a kitchen trash bag of waste, we add a small disposal fee. Smaller jobs are included in labor. For very large jobs (full room demos), a dumpster rental gets quoted separately.

  • Warranty buffer $10 12-month workmanship buffer

    A small per-job amount that lets us cover the 12-month workmanship warranty without re-quoting. About 1 in 20 jobs comes back for warranty work; this line covers all of them.

  • Cleanup included drop cloths, vacuum, wipe

    Drop cloths, dust containment, vacuum, wipe — always included in labor, never a separate line. We leave the room cleaner than we found it.

  • Trip / service fee $0 no call-out or trip fee

    We do not charge a call-out fee or trip fee. The drive is on us. For very far jobs outside our standard service area (Hastings, parts of southwest St. Johns County) we may quote a small travel addition — we tell you about it upfront, never in the invoice.

Can you install my ceiling fan if there's no existing wiring?

If the fan box has wiring already (a switched ceiling light or existing fan), yes. If we need to pull new wire, that crosses into licensed-electrician territory and we'll refer you out.

Will you replace my breaker?

No — anything inside the panel we refer to a licensed electrician. Working in a live panel without a license is illegal in Florida and we won't do it.

Is your electrical work permitted?

Per-fixture work in Florida generally doesn't require a permit. New circuits, service changes, and panel work do — and that's electrician work, not handyman work.
