Handyman in St. Augustine
Locally-owned handyman service · Licensed, bonded, insured · 35-minute drive from HQ
St Johns Handyman serves St. Augustine, the historic southern part of our St. Johns County service area. We are licensed, bonded, and insured. Most St. Augustine homes are older — many built before 1970, some in the historic downtown over 100 years old — and they need a different approach than newer construction. We handle plaster patching, original-window weatherproofing, settled-door rehangs, and the everyday repairs older homes need. We do not take on full historic restoration. Travel time from our HQ is about 35 minutes. Call (904) 871-5791.
Jobs we see often in St. Augustine
St. Augustine homes are typically older than the rest of our service area — 50 to 100+ years. The job mix reflects that: plaster patching (which we treat similarly to drywall, with the right approach), weatherproofing for original windows that won't be replaced, settled-door rehangs, and the everyday repair work that any home of any age needs. We don't take on full historic restoration — that's a specialty trade with permitting requirements — but day-to-day handyman work in St. Augustine homes is squarely in our lane.
St. Augustine — older homes, older problems
Most of the work we do in St. Augustine is in homes built between 1900 and 1980. The materials and methods are different — plaster walls, original wood windows, real heart-pine floors, single-glazed glass. The work isn’t harder, but it requires patience and the right approach. We don’t try to make a 1925 plaster wall behave like a 2005 drywall wall; we treat each on its own terms.
What we do in St. Augustine
- Plaster patching. We use either skim coat (for shallow patches) or veneer plaster (for deeper repair). With the right approach, plaster patches are invisible.
- Original wood door rehangs. Slabs have settled significantly in 100-year-old homes. Frames are no longer square. We re-shim, plane, and adjust strikes rather than replace.
- Window weatherproofing. Original wood windows can be made tight again with the right weatherstripping and glazing-compound restoration. Most historic-home owners want to keep the originals.
- Interior paint. Plaster takes paint differently than drywall; we prep accordingly with bonding primer.
- Wood floor repair. Most St. Augustine wood floors are original heart pine. Small repairs we do; full refinishing is a specialty trade.
What we don’t do
Full historic restoration, structural framing in pre-1940 homes, original-window restoration to museum standards, anything requiring a historic preservation specialist. For those we know who to refer you to.
Sub-areas with their own pages
The St. Augustine area covers more than just the historic district. For the specific neighborhoods we serve we maintain dedicated pages:
- Anastasia Island — whole-barrier-island umbrella covering St. Augustine Beach, Crescent Beach, Treasure Beach, and Davis Shores. Use this if you think of your location as the barrier island rather than a specific town.
- Davis Shores — historic 1920s Mediterranean Revival neighborhood on Anastasia Island, directly across the Matanzas River from downtown St. Augustine via the Bridge of Lions. Mixed-age housing stock.
- St. Augustine Beach — separately incorporated barrier-island city on Anastasia Island. Salt-air coastal job mix.
- Vilano Beach — coastal community north of the inlet across the Bridge of Lions. Permanent residences plus a large vacation-rental base.
- St. Augustine Shores — established inland community south of St. Augustine off US-1. Mostly 1970s-1990s homes ready for second-owner refresh work.
- Crescent Beach — quieter barrier-island community south of St. Augustine Beach. Mostly permanent residences, steady maintenance-driven work.

St. Augustine — questions we get a lot
How fast can you get to St. Augustine?
St. Augustine is about 35 minutes from our Ponte Vedra Beach HQ. We batch St. Augustine jobs to keep the drive efficient and we typically book 5–7 days out for non-emergency work.
Do you charge a travel fee for St. Augustine?
For standard service-area work, no. For very small jobs that don't justify the drive, we may suggest a closer handyman or quote a modest travel addition that we tell you about upfront.
Do you work on historic / pre-1900 homes?
We do day-to-day handyman work in historic homes — plaster patching, door rehangs, weatherproofing, paint, interior repairs. We do not do structural restoration, original-window restoration, or anything requiring a historic preservation specialist. We'll tell you straight which side of the line your job is on.
Can you patch plaster like drywall?
Plaster patching needs a different approach than drywall — we use bonding agents and either skim coat or replace with veneer plaster depending on the depth. The result is invisible. Most plaster patches run $200–$500, slightly more than equivalent drywall.
Do you do hurricane prep in St. Augustine?
Yes. Older St. Augustine homes are especially vulnerable to wind-driven rain, and we do a lot of weatherproofing and window-protection work before hurricane season.
