Garage door handyman work — what's in scope and what's not
Panel painting, weatherstripping, track lube, cosmetic trim. Spring + opener work goes to a licensed garage door specialist.
St Johns Handyman handles the garage-door work that is safely within handyman scope: panel and trim painting, weatherstripping replacement, track lubrication and cleaning, exterior surround trim repair, cosmetic hardware swaps, and rust-spot treatment. Typical jobs $100–$400. What we explicitly do NOT do: torsion or extension spring replacement, opener installation or replacement, full panel replacement, or any structural garage-door work. Springs hold enormous stored energy and a mistake can be fatal; these are licensed garage-door specialist territory with specific safety certifications. We refer all spring and opener work to a trusted local specialist and we tell you upfront before quoting any garage-door visit. We do not charge a call-out fee. Call (904) 871-5791.

Why we draw a hard line on garage doors
Most “garage door handyman” pitches on the internet hide the safety risk. We’d rather lose the job than cause an injury. Two specific cases where we will never compromise:
Springs
Torsion springs hold 200+ pounds of stored energy across multiple winds. When a spring breaks during operation, it can launch shrapnel; when one fails during DIY removal, it can kill. Florida sees multiple severe spring-related injuries every year — most are homeowners trying to save the $250-$400 a licensed specialist charges. We do not touch garage-door springs under any circumstance. If you have a broken spring, call the specialist we refer to — they have the bars, the safety equipment, and the certification.
Openers
Opener installation is more electrical and structural than it looks. The opener has to be mechanically balanced against the door’s weight (which the spring controls), wired to the home’s electrical, programmed against the safety photo-eyes, and attached to ceiling joists with proper hardware. Done wrong, the opener fails, the door fails, the photo-eyes fail to detect a child, and someone gets hurt. We refer all opener work to a licensed garage-door installer.
What we DO on garage doors
The cosmetic and maintenance side of garage doors is genuinely handyman scope and we handle it routinely:
- Panel and trim repainting — high-ROI curb-appeal job
- Weatherstripping replacement — bottom seal, side seals, top seal
- Track lubrication and cleaning — quiets a noisy door, extends roller life
- Cosmetic hardware swap — carriage-house upgrades, faux strap hinges
- Exterior trim and surround repair — rot remediation around the door opening
- Rust spot treatment — prevents spread on steel panels
How we structure the visit
When you call us about garage-door work, the first thing we do is confirm the scope is in our handyman lane. If it touches springs, the opener, or full panel replacement, we tell you on the phone and refer to a specialist — no charge, no upsell, no “we can probably handle that.” For the work that IS in our lane, we give a firm written quote before any work begins.
Who we refer to for spring and opener work
We maintain a relationship with one trusted garage-door specialist in the St. Johns County area who carries the proper certifications, insurance, and safety equipment. Ask us for the referral when you call — most opener and spring jobs go from “no” to “scheduled” within 48 hours.
Honest line items. No mystery fees.
Here's exactly how we put a quote together for a typical small repair. Tap any row to see what each line covers.
-
Labor $180 3 hrs × $60/hr
We charge a per-job rate when we can. When the scope is open-ended, we charge $60/hour per technician. We always tell you which it is before we start so you can decide.
-
Materials $42 drywall, primer, fasteners
We pass through our cost on materials at no markup. Receipts on request. Anything we already have on the truck — patch kits, common fasteners — is included in labor at no extra charge.
-
Dump / disposal $25 haul-away of debris
If the job creates more than a kitchen trash bag of waste, we add a small disposal fee. Smaller jobs are included in labor. For very large jobs (full room demos), a dumpster rental gets quoted separately.
-
Workmanship coverage $10 24-month workmanship coverage
A small per-job amount that funds our 24-month workmanship coverage. If a covered workmanship issue comes up within 24 months of completion, we'll come back and make it right at no extra labor charge — see our Terms of Service for what's covered and what isn't.
-
Cleanup included drop cloths, vacuum, wipe
Drop cloths, dust containment, vacuum, wipe — always included in labor, never a separate line. We leave the room cleaner than we found it.
-
Trip / service fee $0 no call-out or trip fee
We do not charge a call-out fee or trip fee. The drive is on us. For very far jobs outside our standard service area (Hastings, parts of southwest St. Johns County) we may quote a small travel addition — we tell you about it upfront, never in the invoice.

Garage door handyman service — questions we get a lot
Do you replace garage-door springs?
No. Garage-door torsion and extension springs hold thousands of pounds of stored energy and require specific safety certifications and tooling to service safely. A mistake during spring replacement can be fatal — multiple homeowners are injured every year attempting DIY spring work. We refer ALL spring work to a licensed garage-door specialist who carries the proper safety equipment and certification. We can give you a trusted referral.
Do you install or replace garage-door openers?
No. Opener installation involves electrical wiring to the opener, programming the safety-eye sensors, balancing the door against the opener's torque rating, and ensuring proper drive-system attachment. This is licensed garage-door installer work — both for safety and code compliance. We refer to a local specialist.
What CAN a handyman do on a garage door?
Cosmetic and maintenance work: painting the panels and trim, replacing weatherstripping, lubricating tracks and rollers, swapping decorative hardware (handles, faux strap hinges, lift handles), repairing the exterior trim around the opening, treating rust spots. None of these touches the spring, the opener mechanism, or the structural attachment of the door to the home — they're safe handyman work.
My garage door is noisy. Can you quiet it?
Yes — most noisy garage doors need track lubrication and roller lubrication, not part replacement. We clean the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges with a proper silicone-based garage-door lubricant (not WD-40, which attracts dust), and check for loose hardware. Most noisy-door jobs run $100–$175.
Can you replace a damaged panel?
No. Full panel replacement requires disconnecting the door from the spring system, ordering a panel that matches the existing door (material, profile, color), and reinstalling under proper tension. We refer panel replacement to a specialist. We CAN treat cosmetic damage — scrapes, scuffs, surface dents — with body filler, prime, and paint, which is often enough for non-structural damage.
Can you repaint a faded garage door?
Yes. Garage-door repaint is one of the highest-ROI exterior cosmetic jobs we do — it transforms curb appeal for $250–$550. We prep (sand, degrease, mask), prime if needed, apply two coats of exterior-grade paint suited to the panel material (steel, aluminum, wood). Most single-car doors are done in a day; double-car or wood doors may be a two-day job.
How fast can you come out?
Within 3–5 business days for routine garage-door cosmetic work. For emergency weatherstripping replacement before a storm we can usually accommodate same-week. For spring or opener emergencies we connect you directly with a trusted specialist who can come faster.
