Sliding door repair across Ponte Vedra Beach

Roller replacement, track service, lock fixes, glass-door tune-ups. Most jobs done in a single visit.

St Johns Handyman repairs and tunes up sliding doors of every common type across Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Johns County: patio sliding glass doors, interior pocket doors, interior bypass closet doors, and barn-door installs on existing tracks. Typical jobs — roller replacement, track service, lock and latch repair, weatherstripping, sticking-door tune-ups — run $150–$450. Full slider replacement (new glass, new frame, hurricane-impact installs) is specialty work we refer out, but the everyday roller-and-track issues that make sliders stick, hard to lock, or noisy are core handyman territory. We do not charge a call-out fee and we give a firm estimate before any work begins. Call (904) 871-5791.

What we do

Clean built-up debris, straighten bent track sections, replace damaged track inserts. Sliders that drag despite new rollers usually have a track problem. $150–$300.

Why sliders fail

In Florida, four things break sliders:

  1. Salt-air corrosion on roller wheels and track hardware (worse east of A1A)
  2. UV degradation on the polymer guides and weatherstripping (south-facing sliders fail fastest)
  3. Sand and debris in the track — even one season of unraked yard debris can score the track surface
  4. Foundation settlement misaligning the frame relative to the floor

We diagnose the actual cause in five minutes on arrival. Most sliders we look at have rollers AND track issues — replacing one without the other means a return visit in 18 months.

The roller-and-track relationship

A bad roller in a clean track is a 90-minute fix. A bad track with new rollers is a six-month problem. We always inspect both before quoting. If the track is salvageable, we clean and align it; if it’s bent or pitted, we replace the track insert or recommend a frame replacement (which is the line where the job leaves handyman scope).

What we don’t do on sliders

Full hurricane-impact slider installation with structural attachment and permit work — that’s licensed contractor territory. Glass replacement on broken slider panels — we coordinate with a glass specialist rather than doing it ourselves. Custom slider fabrication. Anything requiring a building permit. For these we refer to specialty contractors familiar with Ponte Vedra and St. Johns County permitting.

What makes our slider work different

We bring the parts. Most franchise handymen show up, diagnose the issue, leave to source parts, and bill for a second visit. We carry the common roller assemblies, track inserts, weatherstripping, lock bodies, and pocket-door hangers on the truck. Roughly 80% of slider jobs we complete in one visit.

What's in a quote

Honest line items. No mystery fees.

Here's exactly how we put a quote together for a typical small repair. Tap any row to see what each line covers.

  • Labor $180 3 hrs × $60/hr

We charge a per-job rate when we can. When the scope is open-ended, we charge $60/hour per technician. We always tell you which it is before we start so you can decide.

  • Materials $42 drywall, primer, fasteners

We pass through our cost on materials at no markup. Receipts on request. Anything we already have on the truck — patch kits, common fasteners — is included in labor at no extra charge.

  • Dump / disposal $25 haul-away of debris

If the job creates more than a kitchen trash bag of waste, we add a small disposal fee. Smaller jobs are included in labor. For very large jobs (full room demos), a dumpster rental gets quoted separately.

  • Workmanship coverage $10 24-month workmanship coverage

A small per-job amount that funds our 24-month workmanship coverage. If a covered workmanship issue comes up within 24 months of completion, we'll come back and make it right at no extra labor charge — see our Terms of Service for what's covered and what isn't.

  • Cleanup included drop cloths, vacuum, wipe

Drop cloths, dust containment, vacuum, wipe — always included in labor, never a separate line. We leave the room cleaner than we found it.

  • Trip / service fee $0 no call-out or trip fee

We do not charge a call-out fee or trip fee. The drive is on us. For very far jobs outside our standard service area (Hastings, parts of southwest St. Johns County) we may quote a small travel addition — we tell you about it upfront, never in the invoice.

Frequently asked

Sliding door repair and installation — questions we get a lot

Why does my patio slider drag?

Almost always the rollers. Roller wheels are nylon or steel with a tension spring; after 10–15 years of weight and salt-air exposure (a Florida specialty), the wheels seize, deform, or the springs lose tension. New rollers are a 60–90 minute job with the right parts. We carry the most common roller assemblies on the truck.

Can you replace the rollers without removing the door?

On most sliders, no — the door has to come off the track to access the roller adjustment screws and the rollers themselves. Once the door is off, replacement is straightforward. We do it carefully so the glass stays intact; large heavy panels we handle with two techs.

Do you do pocket doors?

Yes. Pocket doors that have jumped the rail, have worn hangers, or drag against the pocket-wall opening — all standard handyman scope. We re-hang the door, replace the track hangers if needed, and repair any trim damage at the pocket entry.

Can you fix a sliding door lock that won't latch?

Yes. The most common failure is the mortise lock body or the strike alignment after the door has settled or the track has shifted. We replace failed lock bodies, realign strikes, and install foot-bolt security additions. Most lock fixes $125–$275.

What about hurricane-impact slider replacement?

Full hurricane-impact slider installation is specialty work — it requires structural attachment, specific manufacturer certification, and a building permit. We don't do that ourselves; we refer to licensed window-and-door contractors who specialize in hurricane installs. We DO handle weatherstripping upgrades and threshold replacements on existing impact sliders to improve seal.

How long does a slider tune-up take?

Most roller-and-track jobs are 60–120 minutes per slider. Pocket doors typically 90 minutes. Lock-only repairs 30–60 minutes. We tell you the time estimate before we start so you know whether to plan around it.

Do you install new sliders?

Interior sliding doors (pocket, bypass, barn-door on existing tracks): yes. Patio slider replacement where the existing frame stays and only the panels and rollers change: yes. Full slider replacement with new frame and structural attachment: we refer out — that's licensed-contractor work with permitting.

Will the slider work as well as new after repair?

Most of the time, yes — new rollers in a sound track on a solid frame restore the door to near-original operation. If the track is bent, the frame is rotted, or the glass seal is broken, we'll tell you upfront that replacement (rather than repair) is the better economic call.
